Abstract

This study examines Alice in Wonderland (2010), directed by Tim Burton, as a sequel to Disney's 1951 animated adaptation. Unlike previous remakes of film franchises, this version continues the original story rather than retelling it. Ten years after her initial visit to Wonderland, Alice finds herself back in a transformed realm now called "Underland," where she must confront the Red Queen and the Jabberwocky. The film's decision to frame Alice as a sequel allows Burton to explore his signature dark, stylized fantasy world, blending Carroll’s whimsical narrative with his own visual aesthetic. This approach not only reimagines the familiar characters but also introduces new elements that deepen the thematic exploration of identity and destiny. By analyzing the film through the lens of adaptation theory and Burton's directorial style, this study argues that Alice in Wonderland successfully extends Carroll’s universe while offering a fresh perspective on its timeless themes.
