Abstract

This article analyzes the complex interplay between religious identity, ethnic culture, and national consciousness within the Greek American community. Focusing on Helen Papanikolas’s work, the paper explores how Greek Americans navigate their religious experiences in the context of globalization and supranational integration. The study examines the historical alignment of Greek national identity with Orthodox Christianity and investigates how this relationship has evolved among Greek Americans. Through a detailed examination of the role of religion in fostering communal bonds and strengthening cultural belonging, the author contends that religious practice serves as a public performance that revalorizes community ties. This work investigates the significance of religious differences in American society, highlighting how these differences have increased in importance over recent decades. The article demonstrates that the Greek American experience is shaped by unique historical factors, including the Byzantine era’s influence on national consciousness and the contemporary political implications of religious affiliation
