Do Tread on My Dreams: The Perception of Cityscape in Science Fiction Films
Keywords:
science fiction, architecture, urban space, modernism, cinemaAbstract
This article analyzes the representation of cityscapes in science fiction films, focusing on the correlation between architectural elements and the thematic meaning of these films. The paper explores how modernist architecture and urban planning are used to depict inhuman, oppressive, and totalitarian worlds, contrasting with the idealistic tenets of modernism. The author contends that cinema and architecture share a symbiotic relationship, with each influencing the other's design and perception. This study examines prominent examples of science fiction films to demonstrate how architectural elements serve as visual commentaries on the films' themes. The article argues that the cinematic medium provides a platform for architects to visualize abstract concepts in spatial forms, while films utilize architecture to create compelling narratives. The significance of this work lies in its interdisciplinary approach, bridging film studies and architectural theory to offer insights into the cultural and ideological implications of urban imagery in science fiction.
