Abstract

The review critiques the exploitative nature of the maquiladora system along the U.S.-Mexico border, highlighting how it perpetuates economic inequality and labor exploitation. Larry J. Estrada summarizes Norma Iglesias Prieto’s work, which centers on testimonies of Mexican women workers in maquiladoras—manufacturing plants relying on cheap female labor. These women, often migrating from economically depressed regions, face harsh working conditions despite promises of economic independence. The review emphasizes the book's strength in giving voice to marginalized women workers and exposing systemic failures of the maquiladora model. Corporations from the U.S., Japan, Germany, and Korea exploit this labor force while avoiding unionization and demands for better wages. The analysis aligns with feminist political economy and critical labor studies, emphasizing how global capitalism intersects with gender and migration.
