Abstract

This article analyzes a study tour entitled 'Hiroshima, Nagasaki and Beyond,' which explored the devastation caused by atomic bombs in Japan during World War II. The author, Işıl Tipioğlu, participated in this two-week tour led by Peter Kuznick, co-writer of 'The Untold History of the United States.' The paper examines the physical and psychological impact of the bombings on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, as well as the perceptions of Japanese and American participants. Key findings include the profound emotional and physical trauma experienced by hibakusha (atomic bomb survivors) and the museums' role in conveying the brutality of nuclear warfare. The article argues that Japan's approach to this historical event emphasizes peace and tolerance over blame, contrasting with other international conflicts. The significance of this work lies in its firsthand accounts and the nuanced understanding it provides of the atomic bomb's legacy.
