This tribute honors the life and academic legacy of Professor Gönül Uçele (1942-2025), a founding pillar of Turkish-American studies. Joining Hacettepe University's English Language and Literature Department in 1966, she completed her PhD on Eugene O’Neill's work in 1969. In 1982, she co-founded the American Literature Department, serving as its chair until 2000, when it was renamed the Department of American Culture and Literature. Under Uçele's guidance, both faculty and students thrived, with her contributions extending beyond teaching to research, conferences, and fostering international networks through ASAT. Retiring from Hacettepe in 2000, she continued teaching at İstanbul Aydın University until the Fall of 2024. Uçele's inspiring classes introduced students to avant-garde literature and contemporary American theater and fiction, nurturing a generation of scholars. Her influential role as a mentor led many to pursue further studies, including this author's own research on Joyce Carol Oates.
