Bu makale, William James’in Amerikan düşünce tarihi bağlamında cumhuriyetçi ideolojiyle ilişkisini incelemektedir. James’in kamusal erdem ve fırsat eşitliği gibi cumhuriyetçi idealleri, geç on dokuzuncu yüzyılın bireycilik ve demokratik kapitalizm koşulları altında yeniden yorumladığı ileri sürülmektedir. Çalışma, cumhuriyetçiliğin kuruluş döneminden itibaren geçirdiği dönüşümü izleyerek bu ideolojinin toplumsal seçkinler arasında nasıl varlığını sürdürdüğünü göstermektedir. Erdem ve ahlak gibi temel kavramlar üzerinden yapılan analiz, James’in cumhuriyetçi ilkeleri modern meslek anlayışı ve toplumsal sorumluluk tartışmalarına uyarladığını ortaya koymaktadır.
