Abstract

This study examines Geoff King's *Indie 2.0: Change and Continuity in Contemporary American Indie Film* (2014), which revisits the concept of independent cinema through the lens of "indie 2.0." Building on previous works like *American Independent Cinema* (2005) and *Indiewood, USA* (2009), King explores how contemporary indie films have evolved while maintaining certain core characteristics. The term "indie" remains contentious due to its dual role as both a label for diverse film productions and the cultural networks that sustain them. King identifies key shifts in production practices, distribution methods, and audience engagement within this second generation of independent cinema. He highlights films such as *Little Miss Sunshine* (2006) and *Juno* (2007), which exemplify quirky, crossover successes, and delves into the low-budget "mumblecore" movement. By analyzing these case studies, King elucidates how indie 2.0 filmmakers navigate changing industry landscapes while preserving the spirit of independent filmmaking. This work contributes to ongoing debates about the nature and future of American independent cinema in an increasingly globalized media environment.
