Abstract

In Digital Memory and the Archive, Wolfgang Ernst's seminal writings are translated into English for the first time, offering critical insights into the evolving nature of archives in the digital age. Edited by Jussi Parikka, this collection explores how contemporary culture is increasingly organized through the logic of the archive, now transformed from a static repository of cultural memory to a dynamic system that integrates everyday activity with immediate data processing and retrieval. Ernst argues that this shift—from storage as an enduring object to processual data flows—redefines memory itself, positioning it within cybernetic systems characterized by feedback loops rather than linear narratives. The volume contributes significantly to the burgeoning fields of media archaeology, digital humanities, software studies, and new materialism, challenging traditional Anglo-American approaches to media theory. By emphasizing the role of technology in shaping cultural memory, Ernst's work invites scholars to reconsider the implications of digital transformation on archival practices and theoretical frameworks.
