Re-Writing the Eugenic Whitman in Michael Cunningham’s Specimen Days (2005)
Keywords:
Walt Whitman, Michael Cunningham, Specimen Days, democracy, cyborg theory, American exceptionalismAbstract
This article analyzes the revisions of Walt Whitman's equation between reproductive health, America, and democratic utopia in Michael Cunningham’s novel Specimen Days (2006). The paper explores how Cunningham rewrites the Whitmanesque connection between body, nature, and American democracy for a post-natural, post-humanist, and post-national world. By problematizing Whitman’s essentialist treatment of the body through the cyborg character Simon, Cunningham relocates democracy in intangible yearning for change and connection, divorcing it from virility, heterosexual procreation, and American exceptionalism. The article argues that Specimen Days serves as a paean to Whitman’s most expansive moments while critiquing his eugenic tendencies. This study examines the multifaceted persona of Whitman in Leaves of Grass and how Cunningham reinterprets these elements in a contemporary context. The significance of this work lies in its demonstration of how literary reinterpretations can challenge historical essentialisms and offer new perspectives on democratic ideals.(The abstract and keywords were prepared retrospectively for indexing purposes using AI-assisted tools and editorial review, based on the original article.
