Abstract

This article examines the function of time in William Faulkner’s The Bear as both a thematic and structural element. It argues that Faulkner employs a non-linear temporal structure to intertwine past and present, emphasizing the subjectivity of human experience. The study highlights how memory, wilderness, and the idea of an Edenic past shape the narrative through the perspective of Ike McCaslin. It demonstrates that time is inseparable from the narrative’s meaning, forming an organic whole that deepens the exploration of destiny, nature, and civilization.
